After mom’s death, star throws no-hitter, hits 4 HR in same day

Of all the contorted, twisted, emotional trauma a high school athlete can go through, it's hard to imagine any being more trying than what Jaydin Goldenstein experienced last month. After a year of estrangement from his mother, a drug addict who spent significant time in jail and a halfway house, Goldenstein sat by her bedside as she died.

According to an excellent piece by the Denver Post's Benjamin Hochman, two days later, still in the midst of his own conflicted feelings of grief, Goldenstein authored what may be the single greatest baseball day in the country in 2011. In a doubleheader for his Holyoke (Colo.) High team, he started the day with a no-hitter, ensuring a massive 11-0 win. In the second game, he hit four home runs, pacing Holyoke to a 15-8 victory. Really.
Making matters even more stirring was just how important the two games were to Holyoke's season. The team needed to win both games to earn the Lower Platte league title. Thanks to Goldenstein, it did.
Afterward, the teenager didn't know how to react to his mother's death and the historic day he produced on a baseball field. His mixed emotions of a long and turbulent relationship between the two blurred the lines between outright ebullience and general angst.
"When she was first getting involved with drugs, it was scary because she was acting different," Goldenstein told the Post. "Then the cops got involved and I was like, 'whoa.' You shouldn't have cops at your house when you're 8 years old.
"I forgave her several times. But she kept messing up. She used to try to call me, and I wouldn't talk to her."
Yet all that emotional confusion melted away in six hours on the baseball diamond, where Goldenstein is a rural town king. The star of the school's football, basketball and baseball teams had never had a finer athletic day. He probably never will again.
"I knew he was playing with a lot of adrenaline and emotion," Goldenstein's father, Clint Goldenstein, told the Post. "That day just let all the emotions out. He was playing the game that he loves."
"Normally I don't think about hitting a home run," said Jaydin, who once before had hit two home runs in a game. "But after the third, I was like — I'm going to try to hit a home run."
Perhaps the best perspective on the game came from the opposing dugout, where the Wray (Colo.) High coach couldn't believe that the same player had single-handedly destroyed his team's title hopes in two consecutive games … in a single day.
"I was so happy for him," Holyoke coach Kyle Bules told the Post. "I talked to one of their coaches after the game, and he said, 'He had most guys' careers in one day!'"
A career in one day, and a lifetime of highs and lows in a week.

Those poor, poor oil companies

Here is a story about deductions that oil companies are currently getting from the U.S. government. I highlighted some of the more interesting ones.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- President Obama repeated his call Tuesday for an end to $4 billion in oil industry tax breaks as gas prices approach $4 a gallon and after a top lawmaker indicated a possible shift in Republican policy.

In a letter to congressional leaders, the president said the oil industry is profitable enough without the tax incentives and that the money should be spent on alternative energy sources and conservation.

"CEOs of the major oil companies have made it clear that high oil prices provide more than enough profit motive to invest in domestic production without special tax breaks," said Obama. "As we work together to reduce our deficits, we simply can't afford these wasteful subsidies."

This week those profits are going to be front and center. BP (BP) is expected to report earnings on Wednesday. Exxon (XOM, Fortune 500) is slated to announce its results on Thursday. Some analysts expect the company's profits to jump 50% from last year. Chevron (CVX, Fortune 500) is scheduled to make its earnings announcement on Friday.

The oil industry and many of its supporters in Congress have long argued that the tax breaks encourage domestic oil production and provide jobs for millions of Americans. Republicans in particular have resisted efforts to eliminate these tax breaks, something many Democrats have been trying to do since at least 2008.

But on Monday night, Speaker of the House John Boehner indicated he might be open to taking some of those breaks off the table.

Drill baby drill won't lower gas prices
"I don't think the big oil companies need to have the oil depletion allowances, but for small, independent oil and gas producers, if they didn't have this, there'd be even less exploration in America than there is today," Boehner said on ABC's World News Tonight. "It's certainly something we need to be looking at."

Depletion allowances let oil companies treat the oil in the ground as capital equipment, and they can write off a certain percentage for each barrel that comes out.

On Tuesday the speaker appeared to backtrack from those comments, with an aid telling CNN that "what the President has suggested so far would simply raise taxes and increase the price at the pump."

Nonetheless, Obama took the chance to pounce, saying in his letter that he was "heartened that Speaker Boehner yesterday expressed openness to eliminating these tax subsidies."

This all comes as the price of gasoline surges above $4 a gallon in many states, making it increasingly difficult politically to defend Big Oil.

As gas prices approach their record highs set in 2008 they are threatening to derail the nation's nascent economic recovery.

The tax breaks in question
The Obama administration is targeting nine tax breaks, according to a paper from the left-leaning Center for American Progress. Four account for the lion's share of the money:

Domestic manufacturing tax deduction: This is the largest single tax break, and would save over $1.7 billion a year if eliminated.

The tax deduction, passed in 2004, is designed to keep factories in the United States. Companies that manufacture here can deduct 9% of their income from operations that are attributed to domestic production.

But some question if that incentive is really appropriate for oil companies. "What are they going to do, move the oil field to the North Sea," said one staffer at the Center for American Progress said in an interview earlier this year.

No, but higher costs in the United States may make them move the drill rigs to the North Sea or some other place.

Eliminating the tax breaks "would actually discourage new energy projects and new hiring in one of the nation's most dependable job-creating industries," the American Petroleum Institute said in a statement at the time, noting the industry currently supports over 9 million jobs.

The percentage depletion allowance: This lets oil companies deduct about 15% of the money generated from a well from its taxes. Eliminating it would save about $1 billion a year.

The deduction essentially lets oil companies treat oil in the ground as capital equipment. For any industry, the value of that equipment can be written down each year.

But critics say oil in the ground is not capital equipment, but a national resource that the oil companies are simply using for their own profit.

The foreign tax credit: This provision gives companies a credit for any taxes they pay to other countries. Altering this tax credit would save about $850 million a year.

Foreign governments can collect money from oil companies through royalties -- fees for depleting their national resources -- and income taxes.

A royalty would be deducted as a cost of doing business, and would likely shave about 30% off a company's tax bill. Categorized as income tax, it is 100% deductible.

Foreign governments long ago grew wise to the U.S. tax code. To reduce costs for everyone involved and attract business, they agreed to call some royalties income taxes, allowing oil companies to take the 100% deduction on a bigger slice of their bill.

Intangible drilling costs: This lets the industry write off about $780 million a year for things like wages, fuel, repairs and hauling costs.

All industries get to write off the costs of doing business, but they must take it over the life of an investment. The oil industry gets to take the drilling credit in the first year.

It doesn't get much better than this.

"Save Me a Spot"

This job affords me some incredible opportunities. Being a member of the
FOX 6 Sports team means I've been able to witness and report on events
and people that many can only admire from a distance. I never take these
situations for granted and sincerely appreciate being involved in
whatever capacity each permits.

Monday marked just the most recent case as I had the unparalleled privilege to
be a part of Aaron Rodgers charity event to benefit the MACC Fund, a charity
towards eradicating childhood cancer and blood disorders.

Scattered throughout the crowd of rabid Packers aficionados, were the people
who I consider the event's real MVPs. They are the families who've been forced
to deal with one of life's toughest sentences - the loss of a child.

Those who sprung for the tickets were not disappointed. In a world where many
athletes regurgitate canned and rehearsed responses, the Packers quarterback
was refreshingly candid. Aaron addressed a number of topics with in-depth,
honest reaction - even some that if reprinted and mass distributed might raise
some eyebrows.

Aaron stressed the importance of availability and accountability. In his opinion,
it is a player's responsibility to attend all of the team activities as they are all
intended to better the team as a whole. And then, similarly, he addressed the
importance of taking the heat/criticism when one falls short of expectations and
duties.

He is never nervous to take the field. Aaron is supremely confident in the
preparation he's put in during the week leading up to Sunday's match up.
The way the 2009 season ended was disappointing but his self-confidence
was not affected by the outcome. One of the toughest realizations was that
that combination of players would never take the field together again.
He likened the team to a family and admitted that conflict can and does
occasionally exist but they try to handle such situations with maturity and
civility.

He talked music and his love for tunes at a young age revealing that his mom
used to sing and play lullabies and country music when he was a child. Aaron's
record label Suspended Sunrise is a product of this passion but also a contingency
plan for life after football. His favorite song is Ben Harper's 'Forever' and he's
envious of John Mayer's guitar skills though not his tabloid reputation. He
appreciated my affinity for Keith Urban but gave the audience a thumbs-down
when I mentioned fellow country crooner Kenny Chesney.

His favorite book is The Bible and he tries to read it every day not just when
life's challenges and struggles surface.

His favorite movie is The Princess Bride which he admits he's caught flack
for but says he and his childhood friends can recite every line from the film
and it is simply a great story.

Rodgers' answers to questions on this night were certainly admirable. And
I honestly didn't think I could respect Aaron more. But I was wrong.

My friend, the father of that young girl who passed, was there that night. He was
one of several attendees brought up on stage where he caught a football thrown
by the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers.

He asked Aaron to sign the football he'd caught. He wondered if he'd make it
out to his daughter. It isn't shocking that Rodgers obliged. What caught me off
guard was the dedication he made. It wasn't until after Aaron left that I first saw
the autograph... and the simple yet sweet message that brought tears to this father's
eyes: "To Cheri the angel. Save me a spot. - Aaron Rodgers"

I hope that Packers fans realize how lucky they are to have such an upstanding
young man leading their team on the field every weekend. I hope they appreciate
the challenges that were thrust upon him and acknowledge the maturity with
which he handled them. I hope they stand behind the kid and respect him not only
for his incredible talent but for his intelligence and honesty, poise and compassion.

My job has afforded me the chance to watch Aaron Rodgers play football for the
last few seasons. But I am truly thankful for the opportunity to see the other side
of this impressive young man. And pass on some of what I witnessed to you.

If you haven't seen the video yet that Craig Warmbold and Lezli Young put together yet on the the Jacob Gassen's funeral you have got to see it. It brought back a lot of memories for me. My brother died in 1985 while on a training flight for the Air National Guard. Our fighting men and women deserve more than we can give them.

A 16-year-old cross country runner from San Francisco named Holland Reynolds collapsed just before crossing the finish line at a race last week. Then she crawled the last 15 feet to help her team win the state championship.

Strangest Mugshot Ever? A Man With Half a Head Is Arrested for Soliciting a Prostitute:

This is a candidate for one of the STRANGEST MUGSHOTS ever.

--25-year-old Carlos Rodriguez of Miami, Florida was arrested earlier this month for soliciting a prostitute . . . when he approached an undercover police officer and told her he was looking to pay $80 for some [rhymes with "wussy"].

--And in his mugshot, you can see that he only has HALF A HEAD.

--Yes, that's right, half of a head. It appears that his skull is totally caved in and the top of his head is gone. We have no idea where his brain went. We have no idea how he's walking and talking, let alone savvy enough to solicit prostitutes.

Some guy built his own robot costume for Halloween and posted a video of it on YouTube. The costume itself is cool . . . it looks like one of the military robot suits from "Avatar" . . . but it's so big it would never fit through a door.

Several towns in Hungary were flooded yesterday with a reddish brown liquid that looked like mud. But it was actually something much worse. It was a toxic byproduct from an aluminum plant that had a MAJOR accident.

--The plant's reservoir burst, causing a flash flood of toxic sludge that covered 16 square miles. The sludge is so toxic, it can burn human skin. At least four people were killed, and 120 were injured.

Everyone knows that a glass of wine a day is good for your heart. But the website Cracked.com put together a list of the six most SURPRISING ways alcohol is good for you. Here's the list . . .

#1.) ALOCHOL CAN HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT. In a study of 37,000 people, the ones who had a few drinks a week were thinner than people who didn't drink at all. Not surprisingly, BINGE drinkers were the chubbiest.

#2.) ALCOHOL IS AN ANTIDOTE. The ingredient in antifreeze that makes it work is called ethylene glycol (--pronounced eth-a-leen GLY-call. And it's EXTREMELY poisonous.

--If you drink it, symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, paranoia, dementia, and hallucinations. And eventually, it forms little, needle-shaped crystals inside your body that shred your kidneys and kill you.

--But if you call Poison Control, they'll tell you to drink a few shots of vodka, THEN go to the hospital.

--Here's why: Your body digests ethanol quickly, and vodka is basically just ethanol and water. So if you drink enough vodka, you should be able to pass the ethylene glycol in your urine before it crystallizes and kills you.

--The method is so reliable, it's used in hospitals all over the world.

#3.) ALCOHOL IMPROVES YOUR LIBIDO. But only if you drink a little. Studies have shown that men who drink in moderation are 20 to 30 percent less likely to have problems with erectile dysfunction.

#3.) ALCOHOL MAKES YOU SMARTER. In a study that was published in the "British Medical Journal," people who had 30 drinks per week performed better on logic and reasoning tests than people who drank very little or didn't drink at all.

--And they even scored better on short-term MEMORY tests.

#5.) ALCOHOL HELPS IF YOU TAKE A SHOT TO THE HEAD. Researchers studied almost 40,000 cases of people with head injuries. And patients had less swelling in their brains if they were DRUNK when the injury occurred.

--The reason alcohol keeps your brain from swelling is because it's an anti-inflammatory, like ibuprofen.

#6.) ALCOHOL CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE. When you fall down, your body usually tenses up and braces for impact.

--But when you're drunk, your central nervous system is basically numb, so your body stays relaxed, and not as much of the force is transferred to your bones and vital organs.

--Here's an example, but don't try this at home: A Russian guy drank THREE BOTTLES OF VODKA, then jumped out of his kitchen window. He fell FIVE STORIES, then he got up, walked upstairs, and jumped AGAIN.

--And he survived with just a few cuts and bruises.

FIVE HOUSEHOLD ITEMS WITH OTHER USES:

You've probably seen those lists about "other" uses for regular household items. But there's a new one from Prevention.com that's pretty good, because the secondary uses for some of these things are just bizarre. Here are the top five . . .

#1.) USE ALKA-SELTZER ON INSECT BITES. It has aspirin in it, which helps if the bites are itchy or painful. Calamine lotion has zinc oxide in it, which can dry out your skin. But Alka-Setzer won't. Plus, it works faster.

--If you want to try it, crush up one Alka-Seltzer tablet, mix it with water, and add a pinch of oatmeal, which also soothes your skin. Then just rub it on. The bug bite should feel better immediately.

#2.) USE MOUTHWASH TO PREVENT ATHLETE'S FOOT. Pour some on a cotton ball, then rub it all over the bottoms of your feet and in between your toes after you shower.

--The only catch is, it has to have alcohol in it because that's what makes it work, and some types of mouthwash are alcohol-free, like ACT or Tom's Of Maine.

#3.) USE ALOE VERA TO GET RID OF CANKER SORES. Aloe vera has vitamins and amino acids that repair damaged tissue. And a study found that people healed 50% faster if they applied aloe vera directly to their canker sores.

#4.) USE NASAL SPRAY TO STOP A NOSEBLEED. Most nosebleeds can be stopped by just pinching your nose for 10 to 20 minutes. But if that doesn't work, try a nasal spray like Afrin or Mucinex.

--About two-thirds of people who go to the emergency room for nosebleeds are successfully treated with oxymetazoline (--pronounced oxy-meta-ZOH-leen), which is the active ingredient in nasal sprays like Afrin and Mucinex.

#5.) USE BAKING SODA ON IRRITATED SKIN. It takes the sting out of sunburns, and it helps with itchiness and discomfort if you have eczema or get poison ivy.

--If you must know, it's because baking soda is sodium bicarbonate . . . a mild alkaline compound that can get the pH balance of your skin back to normal. The best way to use it is to draw a bath, then pour in one cup of baking soda.

--Make sure you mix it in really well so it completely dissolves. Then just soak in the tub for about 30 minutes.

A 15-YEAR-OLD WITH DOWN SYNDROME IS ABOUT TO GET HIS BLACK BELT IN KARATE!

This is a really UNBELIEVABLE story out of Howell, in eastern Michigan. 15-year-old Adam Stone has Down syndrome . . . mentally, he's at about a fourth-grade level. He also has autism, asthma and was born with four holes in his heart.

--And, basically, he's said to the world: Eff all that. I'm getting my BLACK BELT in karate anyway.

--Adam has been taking karate for years and, in the next few months, he should earn his black belt.

--His instructor is Sam Larioza, who says that Adam has legitimately earned every belt along the way . . . no special treatment. Quote, "Earning a black belt is tough, but for Adam to get it, it's like . . . climbing Mount Everest."

Recently, 16-year-old Xiao Wei was working at an Internet café in northeastern China, when he was approached by a group of local gang members.

Health Care 101: A Primer On Obama’s Bill

It took lawmakers a year to shape President Obama’s health care bill. If it finally passes Congress, it’ll take a decade to write the user manual for consumers and doctors, employers and insurance companies. Some health insurance consumer protections would go into place immediately, while others would be phased in. The big expansion in coverage comes in four years. About 25 million people would sign up, with most getting tax credits to help pay premiums. But even if the 2,700-plus-page bill passes, it’s only the end of the beginning. The House is expected to vote on the final legislation this week, with the Senate to follow later. Here’s some things you should know about the bill.

Immediate Changes:
· Uninsured people with medical problems will have a workable alternative. The bill pumps $5 billion into high-risk insurance pools run by the states to provide coverage to those with preexisting conditions. Taxpayer-backed insurance won’t be free, but premiums should be much lower than what’s charged by private insurers.

· For people with private health insurance – about two-thirds of Americans – there would be some new safeguards. For example, insurers would be barred from placing lifetime dollar limits on coverage and from canceling policies except in cases of fraud. Children could stay on their parents’ coverage until age 26.

The Self-Employed:
· Starting in 2014, self-employed people and those whose employers don’t offer coverage would be able to pick a plan through a health insurance exchange. It’s modeled on the federal employee health program available to members of Congress, with a range of private plans. Small businesses could join also.

· About 25 million would buy coverage through state exchanges, and nearly 60% would be eligible for help with their premiums. The new tax credits would be computed according to income. The money would go straight to the insurer. For example, a family of four making $44,000 would pay $2,763 in premiums for a policy worth $9,345. But a similar family making $66,000 would have to pay $6,257 in premiums.

· People with employer-provided insurance would not see major changes. But if they lost their job, they’d be able to get coverage through the exchange.

Doctors:
· Primary care doctors and general surgeons practicing in underserved areas such as inner cities and rural communities would get a 10% bonus from Medicare. But the more significant changes for doctors would unfold slowly. The goal is to start rewarding doctors for keeping patients healthy, not just treating them when they get sick.

· The plan would use Medicare as a testing ground for new ways of coordinating care for patients and multiple chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart problems. Primary care doctors would become care managers for such patients, keeping close tabs on medications and basic health indicators.

Employers:
· Obama’s plan wouldn’t require employers to provide insurance to their workers, but it would hit them with a stiff fine if even one of their workers gets a federally subsidized coverage. Companies with 50 or fewer workers would be exempt, and those with 25 workers or less could get federal assistance.

· But the fines could turn into a big headache for many employers, particularly since they may not be able to tell if their workers are getting benefits from the government. For example, a company with 100 employees that fails to provide coverage could face a fine of $140,000 under the plan Obama unveiled on February 22nd.

Insurance Companies:
· Health insurance companies would face federal regulation and particularly close scrutiny of their bottom line. A lot of Americans were furious when they found out that CEOs of the country’s largest insurance companies made millions of dollars, while at the same time complaining about the company not profiting. Under Obama’s plan, a fixed percentage of income from premiums would have to go to medical care, otherwise insurers would be forced to provide rebates for consumers. That share is 85% for large group plans, and 80% for plans in the small group and individual markets.

· One of the central reforms of the bill won’t start until 2014, when the exchanges open. From then on, insurers will not be able to turn away people with medical problems or charge them more.

Two Fridays ago, an unidentified 21-year-old man forgot his ID and was turned away from a bar where all the local war veterans hang out in Valley Falls, New York (--about 20 miles northeast of Albany).

--So, to show everyone just how angry he was at being denied entrance, the guy cut down the American flag from the VFW's flagpole and SET IT ON FIRE.

--Anyway, members of VFW got pretty mad. So on Sunday, they hunted the man down at a kids' soccer game and gave him three choices:

#1.) They could turn him over to the police for burning the flag.

#2.) They could beat him up.

#3.) Or they could DUCT-TAPE him to a flagpole for SIX HOURS, while wearing a sign around his neck identifying what he did.

--The guy chose option number three.

--According to Nick Nomile, the local VFW post commander and a Vietnam veteran, quote, "He'll never disrespect the flag again, I can tell you that." (!!!) So far, no charges have been filed against anyone. (Albany Times-Union)

Here are some questions and the answers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which predicts a long and busy flu season.

Q. Where’s the vaccine, and how many shots will I need?
A. Many people will need to line up twice – one vaccine for the regular winter flu, which is available now, and a separate vaccine for the swine flu, which will be available in October. It appears that adults will need just one dose of the H1N1 swine flu vaccine, but studies are under way in children to see if they will need a second booster.

Q. Why can’t both vaccines be combined into one shot?
A. Bad timing is the short answer. Swine flu didn’t show up until April, after manufacturers had already started brewing this fall’s batch of the regular winter flu vaccine and too late to add into that mix.

Q. How does swine flu compare to regular flu strains?
A. So far it doesn’t seem any more deadly than regular flu, which kills between 35,000 – 40,000 Americans each flu season. But swine flu does appear to have a different target – the young. And it spreads very easily, especially in crowded schools. A University of Washington study found the typical sick school student infects two to three classmates – so keep sick kids home!! By the way, the sad reality is that you can be contagious up to 24 hours before you show symptoms, one reason the flu spreads like a wildfire.

Q. Who’s at highest risk of severe illness or even death?
A. Children under 5. Pregnant women. People over 65. And people of any age with asthma or other lung disorders; diabetes; heart, kidney, liver or blood disorders; or a weakened immune system.

Q. I think I had the swine flu over the summer. Do I still need the vaccine?
A. YES! Other viruses mimic flu so it’s hard to be sure what you had – or didn’t have.

Q. How does swine flu affect children, and what symptoms should prompt a race to the doctor?
A. Symptoms are the same if you’re 5 or 65: Fever; aches, cough, sore throat, sneezing or runny nose, sometimes diarrhea and vomiting.

Q. What are emergency signs for an adult?
A. Difficulty breathing, pain or pressure in the chest or stomach, dizziness, confusion, severe vomiting or a rebound fever.

Q. Will I or my child need anti-flu medicines Tamiflu or Relenza?
A. No. Most won’t, according to the CDC. Most people will recover with rest and fluids – don’t get dehydrated.

Q. How long should sick kids stay out of school or day care?
A. For 24 hours after the fever breaks naturally, not because of fever-reducing medicine. And never give a child aspirin, only non-aspirin fever reducers. For a child under 5, ask a doctor first about type and dose. You’re considered most contagious while feverish. Bush children especially can be contagious for over a week, so doctors say use common sense – stay home if you’re still sick after the fever breaks.

Q. Is it true that not everyone get a fever?
A. Yes. There are no good estimates although the CDC thinks it’s not too common.

Q. Someone’s sick in my office. How long until I know if I caught it?
A. Up to a week.

Q. What do I do if I find out I have swine flu – or the regular seasonal flu.
A. Tell everyone and stay away from everyone – including co-workers, friends and to the extent possible, family.

Q. Can you catch the flu from the flu shot?
A. No. It’s biologically impossible for a flu shot to give you influenza; it’s made with a dead virus. But the flu shot won’t prevent a cold or other flu-like viruses, causing some confusion.

Q. What if I hate shots?
A. There’s FluMist, which is squirted in your nose and available for people ages 2 to 49.

Q. What if I have asthma?
A. Any flu can worsen asthma attacks. Children may be prescribed Tamiflu at the first symptoms, so call your doctor.

Q. What if I have diabetes?
A. Flu can increase a diabetic’s blood sugar, so test frequently and call your doctor about adjusting insulin or other medications

Q. My child was told to bring hand sanitizer to school and use it regularly. Is there any concern with that?
A. No. Just keep the whole bottle away from kids who might try to swallow it.

High School Football Hero

(CNN) -- A Mississippi high school quarterback is being hailed as a hero for saving a school bus full of elementary and high school students from a gun-wielding girl.

Surveillance camera footage on the Yazoo County school bus on Tuesday captured 18-year-old Kaleb Eulls tackling the 14-year-old girl while the children evacuated the bus.

He managed to wrestle the .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun from her, Yazoo County Sheriff Thomas Vaughan told CNN.

"Things could've got real ugly and there would've been a lot of grieving families in Yazoo County right now," Thomas said. "I'm just extremely glad this young man took the bull by horns and stopped a potentially deadly situation."

Twenty-two children ages 5 to 18 were on the bus to Linwood Elementary School, Yazoo County Junior High and High School when the unidentified girl drew a gun from her bag, Vaughan said. Watch the confrontation unfold on camera »

She started pacing the aisle, shouting and pointing the gun, threatening to shoot those she accused of teasing her, Vaughan said.

At one point, the bus driver calmly called her up to the front and attempted to talk her down. But she returned to the middle of the bus and resumed shouting -- most of which is inaudible on the footage, except for the comment, "don't talk to me."

Someone then appears to grab her attention while the others pour out the front and back doors of the bus.

That person was Eulls, a 6-foot-4, 255-pound high school senior and star quarterback who has verbally committed to play for Mississippi State University after he graduates.

He has also been recognized as one of the best high school players in the state by the Clarion-Ledger newspaper this year.

Eulls was asleep on the bus until his younger sister woke him and told him a girl had a gun, Eulls told CNN affiliate WLBT.

"I just realized something had to be done, and it was just a lot of kids on the bus and [I] couldn't let anything happen to them," he said.

"I tried to grab her attention, just keep her from pointing it at anyone else in the bus," he said.

In a matter of seconds, Eulls rushed the girl to the ground, took the gun from her and was running out the back door of the bus. On the footage, she can be seen running after him. Watch Eulls' mother talk about the incident »

The girl was arrested and taken into custody as a juvenile. She faces 22 counts of attempted aggravated assault, 22 counts of kidnapping and one count of possession of a firearm on school property because the bus is leased by the school district, Vaughan said.

Everyone else, including Eulls, continued on to school, where he received a hero's welcome, Vaughan said.

Eulls' mother said she was a little shocked by the incident.

"When he tackled her to get the gun he could've got shot you know -- she could've shot him. ... His career could've been ruined for the rest of his life," Ora Eulls told HLN's Mike Galanos.

"I told him I was proud of him, we all was proud of him, and I told him don't ever scare me like that again, because he did a tremendous thing saving 23 lives, plus he put his life in danger for their lives."

Since Tuesday, the high school and the police office has been flooded with calls from the media and the public seeking more information on Yazoo County's hometown hero.

Vaughan says he couldn't be more pleased with the situation -- especially when he learned that Eulls was bound for Mississippi State.

From the clocks and banners decorating his office to the screen saver on his computer, Vaughan says he is a Bulldogs fan through and through.

"I'll be tickled to see him on the field. You can see in his body makeup he's extremely strong and fast, and not only is he strong in body, he's strong in mind and in his heart," the sheriff said.

"He's one of the most humble 18-year-olds you will ever see. He's a great kid and if he maintains his mindset as he has it now he'll go a long ways."

A WOMAN SHOPLIFTED A 20-POUND CASE OF BEER BY STUFFING IT UP HER DRESS: (???)

I'm not going to pretend like I know the best technique for shoplifting a 20-pound case of beer. But I'm pretty sure that THIS isn't it . . .

--On Monday, 42-year-old Lisa Newsome was arrested for stealing a 24-pack of beer from a convenience store in Zachary, Louisiana (--about 10 miles north of Baton Rouge).

--But the sweetest part of the whole thing is that on the store's surveillance camera, you can clearly see Lisa shove the entire case of beer UP HER DRESS, and waddle out of the store with it lodged BETWEEN HER LEGS.

--According to the officer who arrested Lisa, quote, "She attempted to show us how she did it. But we told her not to pull her pants down."

--As of last night, Lisa was still being held on $1,000 bond.

Okay, people, it's on: The best "MICHAEL JACKSON IS STILL ALIVE" conspiracy theory . . . (--so far) . . . has begun.

--You can already tell it's a hoax, but nobody can deny these things are fun . . . and, as ELVIS has proven time and time again, they just never get old. (???)

--A video has appeared online of a coroner's van pulling into what looks like an underground garage.

--When it stops, someone gets out, goes to the back of the van and opens one of the doors.

--Then someone whose identity is obviously being shielded gets out of the back of the van . . . and the other person takes them through a door and out of sight.

--The claim being made is that the person getting out of the back of the van is Michael . . . and that this video was shot right after he ALLEGEDLY died and his body was removed from his rented home.

--In other words, he FAKED HIS DEATH.

--The person who posted the clip says, quote, "I checked the license plate number and it looks like the King of Pop is jumping out of the same van his dead body has been in.

--"I got the original video tape from a trustworthy source. I know him for years. And I am sure it's real and Michael is alive."

When Kiera Brinkley of Portland, Oregon, was just two years old, she contracted a bacterial infection, which forced doctors to amputate her arms and legs.

--But Kiera, who's now 16, never gave up her dream of becoming a dancer . . . and of visiting the Juilliard School of Dance in New York City. Well, guess what?

--An organization called Dream Factory heard Kiera's story, and they've arranged for her to visit Juilliard where she'll sit in on classes, and even perform for Juilliard students.

--Kiera says, quote, "I'm in a wheelchair, but that doesn't stop me . . . Never stop, never think that the life you have now is all that you can have. Just go out and do what you love to do."

--Kiera arrived at Juilliard on Tuesday, and she'll be there for the next week.

Wedding Dance

This couple of Minnesota made national headlines for their wedding ceremony when the entire wedding party danced down the aisle leading up to the big event. Now, I heard about this video and thought it must be something really exciting if over seven million people viewed it on youtube. I watched the video and came away disappointed. First off it was not all that well choreographed. Secondly the dancing was not that well done. Lastly, I think it would have been better outside of the church instead of during the service. Your thoughts??

--Well, apparently, the latest fad in Japan is getting a body modification procedure called . . . a "Bagelhead." So what's that mean?

PAULA ABDUL HAS GIVEN SCOTT MACINTYRE A GUIDE DOG:

For some reason, PAULA ABDUL has decided to give SCOTT MACINTYRE . . . (--this year's blind "American Idol" finalist) . . . a GUIDE DOG.

Last Friday, Paula sent Scott out on what he thought was a singing engagement. But she actually took him to the headquarters of the Guide Dogs of America in Sylmar, California. When they got there, she told him he was getting a dog.
(--The Guide Dogs of America website says guide dogs cost roughly $38,000)
Scott "test drove" a few guide dogs at the event . . . but he won't be able to get his own dog until after the "Idols Live" tour wraps in September.
(--That's because he needs to have the time to go through training with the dog first.)
